The latest meeting of the Isle of Man Photographic Society was an intriguing affair as we pitched our skill and abilities against two clubs from the adjacent Islands. Representing Northern Ireland were the Catchlight Camera Club whose pedigree includes Irish Champions 2018/19 Northern Ireland Champions 2020/21 and Federation of International Art Photography world champions 2017. Based in the South East of England were the Beyond Photography Group who have an equally formidable back catalogue of British Photographic Exhibition entries. The judge for the evening was Sue Sibley who gave a fantastic commentary on every entry from her base on the South Coast of England. Unfortunately due a combination of Storm Barra and sensible precautions around Covid 19 it was agreed that we would all view the competition on Zoom from the comfort of our own home.
The format of the competition was that each club entered 25 digital images each, with the judge commenting at the outset on the extremely high standard of entries making it very difficult for her to find any fault and in many cases, leading the scoring to be based on her personal preference. Each image was scored out of 10 with IOMPS members Barry Murphy, Jeremy Broome-Smith and Claire Schreuder scoring 9 and 9.5 with special mention to Sue Jones who scored a maximum of 10 with her House Sparrow image, one of only 9 images to score the maximum points. Throughout the competition the judge spoke in a well informed and knowledgeable way articulating accurately on colour palette, use of negative space and how each image told a story. Of equal importance to the judge was the pose and position of subjects alongside the creative use of light.
The final reckoning saw the Beyond Group scoring a very impressive 223.5 points closely followed by Catchlight with 220.5 points with the IOMPS scoring a very credible 205 points. Well done to all this members who had images selected and entered into what proved to be a competition of the highest calibre.
The IOMPS would like to thank our friends from Catchlight and The Beyond Group for their time in participating in what was thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining evening. The next meeting of the society will now be in the New Year when all are welcome to attend, non-members with a modest entry fee; all meetings are held on Wednesday evenings at St John Ambulance HQ on Glencrutchery Road, starting at 7pm, full programme details are on our website www.iomps.com The Society gratefully acknowledges the support of the Arts Council.
